FISHING REPORT

NT 02 November 2008 Got One Darwin (NT) [ Craig- Got One ]

Darwin and Bynoe Harbours tidal snake drains provided plenty during the new moon period, the low tides producing barramundi to 72cm and blue salmon similar in size. Casting small 3" plastics in pearly colours proved the answer, the flats at the mouth of Reichardt Creek just one of the favourite locations. Casting the foreshores around town at first light coincided with high tide and therefore returned a few surprises, East Point always the regular, a choice spot yet again for spinning chromies at pelagics. One crew were ecstatic at their tally of three Queenies, a 3kg Trevally and one Barra, all taken on the 20gm Halco Twisty!

Shoal Bay has been high on the hit list, producing a swag of barra from all corners. The mouth of the Little Howard was on song bigtime, as fish swallowed the new Stiffy Twitch Baits with attitude. One session here tallied a dozen barra on the outgoing tide alone.....
As you would expect The Rock earned a gernsey too, the top of the tide good for Jewfish and as the tides did the full swing the odd notable barra to 90cm attacked that big #bdsi Barrabait at first incoming tide. That Barrabait is fast becoming one of my favourites, ending up tied onto my line at the Daly, Manton Dam, Dundee and even Shady Billabong!
Speaking of Shady Billabong, ripper reports have come in droves this week. Again the Stiffy Twitch Baits have been deadly, followed closely by Rapala Xrap 10's. Greeny, Chartreuse colours outperformed everything else on the day which is often the case inland.

Results from the XXXX Trailer Boat Club Bluewater Classic indicated some tough going during the last neaps, but as usual a lot of fun was had by all. Although overall fish numbers were relatively low, some great fish were caught including two Sailfish thanks to the efforts of Tamlin Little and Tim Tilbury. Other species that made weigh in included Cod, Coral Trout, Mackeral, Snapper, Trevally and Tuna. There was an overload of awards presented and the winners included Greg Morgan, Jason McCarthy, Tamlin Little, Tim Tilbury, Phillip Clark, Nick Hartley, Ron Cormick,Team Angry Cherabin, Team Reel Thing, Team MC Fish and a swag of juniors just to name a few!
Congratulations to Tony Butler, Trish and the rest of the crew from Darwin Trailer Boat Club for yet another superb effort. We now look forward to 2009!

We now sneak onto the neaps, everybodys bottom bouncing favourite tides that normally contribute well to the esky. Drifting the Emery Point grounds is a good option close to home, and those Berkley Gulps have proved their worth here time and time again. These scented plastics can be rigged a number of ways for success. Perhaps the easiest is onto a paternosta dropper rig and if this is your preference pay particular detail toward keeping the artificial bait as straight as possible on your straight shank hook. You may not require a jig head here, depending on tidal movement. Some fisho's do well running a 'smorgasboard' on their rig, an artificial bait on the top hook and a dead bait on the bottom, more often than not it's the artificial bait that gets nailed first!
Alternatively of course, you could run a single jig head rig cast up into the current and worked slowly back to the boat. Weight is important here, depending on tidal current and it pays to take a few different varietys to get it right on the day. Ideally, you want to be bumping the reefy bottom as much as possible for things to get interesting.....you'll be surprised what happens.
